Information, initial meeting

Book your Newborn Shoot on time!

The best time for a newborn shoot is within the first 5-14 days after birth. During this period, babies are more likely to sleep deeply and curl into adorable poses reminiscent of their womb days.

Please book your newborn shoot on time, preferably 2-3 months before your due date. This enables me to schedule your session when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old.

If you give birth earlier (or later) than your due date, I always ensure that your newborn shoot can be scheduled when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. But I can only give you this 'guarantee' with a timely booking.

Arrive on time for your scheduled newborn shoot!

It's crucial that you arrive on time, as we need the full session to capture the best moments. Newborn shoots can't be done in a hurry!

Comprehensive Tips and Advice for Your Newborn Photography Session

Bringing a new life into the world is a momentous occasion filled with joy, wonder, and a whirlwind of emotions. Capturing these fleeting moments through a newborn photography session is a beautiful way to preserve the innocence and purity of your baby’s early days. As you prepare to book and visit a photographer for a newborn shoot, there are several tips and pieces of advice that can help make the experience smooth, enjoyable, and ultimately rewarding. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know, from selecting the perfect outfits to ensuring your baby is comfortable and content throughout the session.

1. Selecting the Right Photographer

Research and Portfolio Review

Experience Matters: Look for photographers who specialize in newborn photography. Their experience will ensure they know how to handle infants safely and capture the best moments.

Style Alignment: Photographers have different styles—some prefer natural and candid shots, while others focus on posed and stylized images. Review portfolios to find a style that resonates with you.

Safety First: Ensure the photographer follows safety protocols. They should be trained in handling newborns and have a clean, warm studio environment.

Consultations and Communication

Initial Meeting: Schedule a consultation to discuss your expectations, the photographer’s process, and any specific ideas you have.

Ask Questions: Inquire about session length, the number of images provided, turnaround time, and any additional fees.

Comfort Level: Choose someone you feel comfortable with, as this will make the session more relaxed for both you and your baby.

2. Timing the Session Appropriately

Ideal Age for Newborn Photography

First Two Weeks:

Booking in Advance: Schedule your session while you're still pregnant, providing an estimated due date. Photographers can adjust the schedule as needed once the baby arrives.

Flexibility

Understanding Unpredictability: Babies arrive on their own schedule. Communicate with your photographer about any changes to ensure flexibility in rescheduling if necessary.

3. Preparing for the Session

Clothing Considerations

For the Baby:

Simplicity is Key: Newborns are naturally beautiful. Minimal clothing or swaddles often work best to highlight their features.

Comfortable Fabrics: Choose soft, non-irritating materials. Organic cotton or muslin wraps are gentle on sensitive skin.

Color Choices: Neutral and pastel colors photograph well and keep the focus on your baby.

For Parents and Siblings:

Coordinated Outfits: Select clothing in complementary colors and simple patterns to create a cohesive family portrait.

Avoid Distractions: Steer clear of logos, bold patterns, or bright colors that may draw attention away from the baby.

Comfort is Crucial: Wear outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable, as this will reflect in the photographs.

Feeding the Baby

Full Tummy Equals Happy Baby: Plan to feed your baby right before the session to promote sleepiness and contentment.

Extra Supplies: Bring additional bottles or be prepared to nurse on-site in case the baby needs a snack during the session.

Burping Cloths: Have cloths handy to manage any spit-up, keeping your baby’s outfit and the photographer’s props clean.

Changing Diapers

Frequent Changes: Newborns may need diaper changes more often than expected. Bring plenty of diapers and wipes.

Changing Supplies: Pack a portable changing pad for on-the-go changes, ensuring your baby’s comfort and hygiene.

Outfit Changes: Have backup outfits in case of any accidents or spills during the session.

Encouraging Newborn Sleep

Sleep Preparation:

Adjust Sleep Schedule: Keep your baby awake for a short period before the session to increase the likelihood of them sleeping during the shoot.

Warm Bath: A soothing bath can relax your baby, making them more inclined to sleep.

Comfortable Environment:

Temperature Control: The studio should be warm to mimic the womb environment. Dress in layers to adjust your own comfort.

Soothing Sounds: White noise machines or soft music can help lull your baby to sleep.

4. What to Bring to the Session

Essential Items

Diaper Bag Essentials: Diapers, wipes, creams, and any medications your baby may need.

Feeding Supplies: Bottles, formula, nursing cover (if desired), and burp cloths.

Pacifiers: Even if your baby doesn’t usually use one, a pacifier can be a helpful soothing tool during the session.

Personal Props

Heirlooms and Keepsakes: Blankets knitted by family members, special toys, or items with sentimental value add a personal touch.

Themed Props: If you have a particular theme in mind, discuss it with your photographer and bring relevant items.

Comfort Items for Parents

Snacks and Water: Sessions can last several hours. Stay hydrated and energized.

Entertainment: Bring a book or tablet if you anticipate downtime while the photographer works with your baby.

5. During the Session

Patience is Paramount

Time Investment: Newborn sessions can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to accommodate feeding, changing, and soothing.

Stay Relaxed: Babies can sense stress. Keeping a calm demeanor helps maintain a peaceful environment.

Trust the Photographer

Expertise in Handling: Professional newborn photographers are trained to handle babies safely. Allow them to guide the session.

Open Communication: Share any concerns or discomforts immediately. A collaborative approach yields the best results.

Safety Measures

Sanitized Environment: Ensure the studio is clean and that the photographer practices good hygiene.

Spotting and Support: The photographer may ask you to assist in supporting your baby during certain poses for safety.

6. Post-Session Considerations

Image Selection and Editing

Reviewing Proofs: Photographers will provide a gallery of images for you to choose from. Take your time selecting your favorites.

Editing Preferences: If you have specific editing requests, communicate them clearly.

Product Options

Prints and Albums: Decide on the sizes and formats of prints you desire. Custom albums are a cherished keepsake.

Digital Files: Understand the terms regarding digital images—resolution, printing rights, and sharing policies.

Sharing Your Images

Social Media Etiquette: If you plan to share images online, credit the photographer according to their policies.

Privacy Considerations: Discuss with your photographer how they may use your images in their portfolio or marketing materials.

7. Additional Tips and Advice

Managing Expectations

Embrace Spontaneity: Not every pose may work out, and that’s okay. Some of the best photos are candid moments.

Flexibility with Siblings: If including older siblings, prepare them for the session and bring along activities to keep them occupied.

Self-Care for Parents

Rest Up: Ensure you get enough rest before the session. Your well-being affects the overall experience.

Dress Comfortably: Wear clothes that not only look good but also allow you to move and handle your baby with ease.

Health Precautions

Illness Policies: If you or your baby are unwell, reschedule the session to ensure everyone’s safety.

Allergy Awareness: Inform the photographer of any allergies to props, fabrics, or cleaning agents used in the studio.

8. Frequently Asked Questions
